VDAC(alsoknownasVoltage-dependentanion-selectivechannelprotein1,Outermitochondrialmembraneproteinporin1,Plasmalemmalporin,Porin31HL)isanoutermembranemitochondrialprotein.TheVDACproteinsare~30-33kDa(someisoformsarelarger-seebelow).TheVDACproteinsarethoughttoformaqueouschannels,orpores,throughwhichadeninenucleotidescrosstheoutermito-chondrialmembrane.VDACshavebeenimplicatedintheformationofthemitochondrialpermeABIlitytransitionporecomplexinapoptoticcells.Thiscomplex,formedbyVDAC,adeninenucleotidetranslocator(ANT),andcyclophilinD(CypD),isthoughttoallowthemitochondriatoundergometabolicuncouplingandirreversIBLemorphologicchangesthatultimatelydestroythemitochondriaduringapoptosis.VDACsarehighlyexpressedinheart,liverandskeletalmuscle,whereconcentrationsofmitochondriaareattheirhighest.ThisantibodycanbeusedasaloADIngcontrolwithwholecelllysatesandtotalmitochondrialpreparations.
