StructuralMaintenanceofChromosome1(SMC1)isanATPasewhich,withSMC3,formsaheterodimericcomplex.ThesedimersformaV-shapedmoleculewithtwolongcoiled-coilarms,eachhavinganATP-bindingdomainatitsdistalend.TheSMC1/SMC3heterodimerplaysanimportantroleinsisterchromatidcohesionduringmetaphase,associateswiththenuclearmatrixandcentrosomeduringinterphaseandlocalizestokinetochores,spindlesandspindlepolesduringmitosis.Smc1isalsoacomponentoftheDNAdamageresponseandparticipatesinthecellularresponsetoDNAdamagethroughitsphosphorylationonSer957and966.
InhibitionofSMC1isassociatedwithchromosomalaberrations.Theseaberrationplayaroleindevelopmentaldisorderslikeautism.
