Microtubulesareassociatedwithafamilyofproteinscalledmicrotubuleassociatedproteins(MAPs),whichincludestheproteintauandagroupofproteinsreferredtoasMAP1,MAP2,MAP3,MAP4andMAP5.MAP2ismadeupoftwo~280kDaapparentmolecularweightbandsreferredtoasMAP2aandMAP2b.Athirdlowermolecularweightform,usuallycalledMAP2c,correspondstoapairofproteinbandsrunningat~70kDaonSDS-PAGEgels.AlltheseMAP2formsarederivedfromasinglegenebyalternatetranscription,andallshareaC-terminalsequencewhichincludeseitherthreeorfourmicrotubulebindingpeptidesequences,whichareverysimilartothosefoundintherelatedmicrotubulebindingproteintau.
