alpha-internexinisa~66kDaClassIVintermediatefilamentoriginallydiscoveredasitcopurifieswithotherneurofilamentsubunits.Itisrelatedtobutdistinctfromthebetterknownneurofilamenttripletproteins,NF-L,NF-MandNF-H,havingsimilarproteinsequencemotifsandasimilarintronorganization.Itisexpressedinlargeamountsearlyinneuronaldevelopment,butisdownregulatedinmanyneuronsasdevelopmentprocedes.Manyclassesofmatureneuronscontainalpha-internexininadditiontoNF-L,NF-ManBDNF-H.Insomematureneuronsalpha-internexinistheonlyneurofilamentsubunitexpressed.Antibodiestointernexinarethereforeuniqueprobestostudyandclassifyneuronaltypesandfollowtheirprocessesinsectionsandintissueculture.Inadditiontheveryearlydevelopmentalexpressionofalpha-internexinmeansitspresenceisanearlyandconvenientdiagnosticfeatureofneuronalProgenitorscellsandothercellcommittedtotheneuronallineage.
