Pax-5isaBcellspecificactivatorprotein(BSAP).IntheearlystagesofBcelldevelopmemt,Pax-5influencestheexpressionofseveralB-cell-specificgenes,suchasCD19andCD20.Pax-5isexpressedprimarilyinpro-,pre-,andmatureBcells,butnotinplasmacells.Interestingly,Pax-5mRNAistransientlydetectedinthemesencephalonandspinalcordduringembryogenesis.ExpressionthenshiftstothefetalliverandcorrelateswiththeonsetofBlymphopoiesis.ThisindicatesthatPax-5isimportantinBcelldevelopment,butmayalsohavearoleinproperneuronaldevelopment.
PAX5isfoundinmostcasesofmatureandprecursorBcellnon-Hodgkinlymphomas/leukemias.Pax-5isnotdetectedinMultiplemyelomaandsolitaryplasmacytomacelllymphomasdoexpressPax5exceptforthosewithterminalBcelldifferentiation.Tcellneoplasmsdonotstainwithanti-Pax5;howeverthereisastrongassociationwithCD20expression.
