GlutamineSynthetase,alsocalledglutamate-ammonialigase(GLUL),isexpressedthroughoutthebodyandplaysanimportantroleincontrollingbodypHandinremovingammoniafromthecirculation.TheenzymeclearsL-glutamate,themajorneurotransmitterinthecentralnervoussystem,fromneuronalsynapses.

ItsactivityisdecreasedinthecerebralcortexofbrainsaffectedbyAlzheimer"sdisease,particularlyinthevicinityofsenileplaques.Itisalsodecreasedunderconditionsofglucosedeprivation.ThelevelofexpressionofGlutamineSynthetaseisincreasedduringischemiainvivoorhypoxiainculture.
