ICAM-1(CD54)isasinglechainmembraneglycoproteinexpressedonthesurfaceofavarietyofnon-haematopoieticandhaematopoieticcelltypesandhasrolesinsignaltransduction,cellsignallingandlymphocyteadhesion.SolubleICAM-1isdetectableintheplasmaandiselevatedinpatientswithvariousinflammatoryconditions.Intercellularadhesionmolecule1(ICAM-1)isthecellularreceptorforthemajorgroupofhumanrhinovirusSEROtypes,includinghumanrhinovirus14(HRV14)andHRV16.
