Acidicfibroblastgrowthfactorisamemberofthefibroblastgrowthfactor(FGF)family.FGFfamilymemberspossessbroadmitogenicandcellsurvivalactivities,andareinvolvedinavarietyofBIOLOGicalprocesses,includingembryonicdevelopment,cellgrowth,morphogenesis,tissuerepair,tumorgrowthandinvasion.Thisproteinfunctionsasamodifierofendothelialcellmigrationandproliferation,aswellasanangiogenicfactor.Itactsasamitogenforavarietyofmesoderm-andneuroectoderm-derivedcellsinvitro,thusisthoughttobeinvolvedinorganogenesis.
Threealternativelysplicedvariantsencodingdifferentisoformshavebeendescribed.Theheparin-bindinggrowthfactorsareangiogenicagentsinvivoandarepotentmitogensforavarietyofcelltypesinvitro.Therearedifferencesinthetissuedistributionandconcentrationofthese2growthfactors.
