PDGF-AA,PDGF-BBandPDGF-AB,arepotentmitogensforavarietyofcelltypesincludingsmoothmusclecells,connectivetissuecells,boneandcartilagecells,andsomebloodcells.ThePDGFisstoredinplateletalpha-granulesandreleaseduponplateletactivation.ThePDGFisinvolvedinanumberofBIOLOGicalprocesses,includinghyperplasia,chemotaxis,embryonicneurondevelopment,andrespiratorytubuleepithelialcelldevelopment.TwodistinctsignalingreceptorsusedbyPDGFhavebeenidentifiedandnamedPDGFR-alphaandPDGFR-beta.PDGFR-alphaishigh-affinityreceptorforeachofthethreePDGFforms.Ontheotherhand,PDGFR-betainteractswithonlyPDGF-BBandPDGF-AB.
